Federico Uribe: Metamorphosis | Metamorfosis

Artist(s):Federico Uribe

Venue:

Uribe creates sculptures that are interesting from afar. And then you get up close and see that they are constructed from everyday objects like pencils, shotgun shells and the like.
One room created an immersive underwater experience with plasticware.

Helen Lee: Exuviae

Artist(s):Helen Lee

Venue:ALL

Three works, and my attention is drawn to Brood. The wall is covered with hundreds of glass objects in the shape of an origami cicada. As it turns out, I've recently been folding lots of origami cicadas, in anticipation of the emergence of Brood 13. The artist's statement explains the multiple cultural and personal meanings of this image.

Indeterminate Objects

Artist(s):Andrew Bearnot, Stine Bidstrup, Kim Harty, Dylan Palmer, and Brett Swenson

Venue:ALL

A collection of works from alumni of the UW Glass Lab, curated by Helen Lee. I especially liked Brett Swenson's "Glass with Shelf",where the glass was blown into a basket found in a thrift shop.

Winter Exhibition - Gallery III: (W)understory

Artist(s): Brian M. House; Susan H. Kaye; Michael Koppa

House creates mushroom-like bronze scultpures. I would put them on my shelf.
Koppa produces collages that feature mushrooms and cephalopods. I would put them up on my wall.

Jeanne's Studio

Artist(s): Jeanne

Venue: N/A

Jeanne is my neighbor. She makes sculptures, usually masks, out of found objects, recovered wood, etc. I got to see her personal collection. It was great!

Artist(s): Andy Warhol

Venue:Andy Warhol Museum

Warhol is one of my faves. His works range from visually stunning to mind-numbing boring, but are always provocative. I got to see a retrospective of his work at the Art Institute of Chicago several years ago. The museum - in the city where he grew up - covers his entire history.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Postcard collection

Artist(s): DJ SpinCycle (Ankur Malhotra)

Venue:Marquette Waterfront Festival

This was a pop-up display at a popular local festival. It was a collection of postcards - some sent by the artist, some created by the artist. I should have taken more pictures.

Homologies

Artist(s):Rina Yoon and John Schuerman

Venue: Art & Literature Lab

In this project, the artists honor the simple beauty of fallen tree sticks found on their walks in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Korea. The complete set of Homologies provides a view into the origin of sticks and the bond between the artists.
On on side, a photograph of a stick. On the other, the actual stick wrapped in mulberry twine. These are sticks from the oldest trees in Milwaukee and Minneapolis.

Jumping from Trains

Artist(s):Rebecca Kautz

Venue: Art & Literature Lab

As a whole, Jumping from Trains signals the erratic, potentially hazardous endeavor of switching directions or choosing another path.
I didn't get that from looking at the pieces but several of them were interesting.

Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century

Artist(s):s Herbert Gentry, William Henry Johnson, Walter H. Williams and more

Venue:Chazen Museum

Love, adventure, educational opportunities, career advancement, sexual exploration and racism are among the myriad reasons African American artists traveled to Nordic countries during the first half of the 20th century.

Who knew?
I especially like the abstract works of Herbert Gentry.

Man Ray: Return to Reason

Artist(s): Man Ray

Venue:MMOCA

Man Ray was a noted photographer of the early 20th century. This event present four of his recently restored movies. The films were originally silent, but this restoration includes a soundtrack by the band Squrl.
It was a happy coincidence that they preseented these new restorations, since I had taken a strong interest in Man Rays work this past summer.
